The Big Four are rushing to launch AI audit services. Makes sense. There’s demand, and when people don’t understand something - especially something as complex and fast-moving as AI - they look to familiar names for reassurance.

That’s what we call trust infrastructure. You’re not verifying the AI model or the data yourself. You’re trusting that a well-known firm has reviewed it, followed its own guidelines, and done a thorough job. You’re trusting the logo.

But that’s a fragile system. And it’s not enough anymore.

These firms are applying the traditional audit model - review the data, issue a report, certify the outcome. That worked when data was mostly human-generated and relatively finite.

Data Doesn’t Stop, Audits Can’t Keep Up

More than half of all data will be AI-generated by the end of this year. And that number is only going up. This is the last year on Earth where humans create the majority of data.

By next year, the world is projected to generate more than 180 zettabytes of data. That’s 180 billion terabytes per year (180 trillion GB). To make that tangible: if you stored it all on standard 1TB hard drives, and analyzed one drive per second, nonstop, it would take over 5000 years to finish.

No audit firm, no matter how large, can keep pace with that volume. But more importantly: even if they could, should we just take their word for it?

The better approach starts at the source. Instead of creating data and retroactively validating it, we embed proof as it's created. Each piece of data can be time-stamped, cryptographically signed, and made tamper-proof from the start. Companies can immediately begin making provable statements about their data - verifiable by anyone, not just those who know the right people or can afford a third-party review.

This is what the Big Four might aim to do in their audit systems - and that’s good. But unless those internal checks are verifiable by others and resistant to tampering, they’re still operating on trust. And that’s not enough at the scale we’re moving into.
