Stability supports BedRock team from Singapore Management University's Computing and Law Program

Stability is supporting Singapore Management University’s Computing and Law Program, a unique program that offers a Bachelor of Science (Computing and Law). Graduates often subsequently pursue Juris Doctor degrees so they can practice law while boasting a strong IT engineering background, or go into roles where niche legal engineering expertise is required.

Our student team built an application called BedRock to help prove the authenticity of digital audio-video evidence. BedRock (i) chunks; (ii) recursively hashes video files; and (iii) writes the hash data to Stability’s Global Trust Network (GTN) in real time, as the video is being created.

This enables BedRock video files to be checked against GTN records to prove whether a video has been altered, and if so, from what time-stamp onwards, if a video needs to be adduced as electronic evidence.

The immutable, public, trustless, and decentralized nature of the GTN ensures that the BedRock hashes are a reliable source of truth and forensically verifiable.

BedRock was showcased across various modalities including web applications, mobile apps, and CCTV hardware. BedRock technology can be applied across numerous other modalities, such as satellite imagery or videos, civilian or military drone footage, police bodycams, and more.

At Stability’s invitation, VIP guests from Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), the Singapore Academy of Law, and leaders in national security and digital policy, attended the showcase.

Today is the worst that AI tools will ever be. AI tools will be better tomorrow, and each day that follows - cheaper, faster, more realistic/convincing, more widely available, and easier for laypersons to use. It is increasingly critical to be able to verify the sources and integrity of electronic data.

We shouldn’t wait until we identify files as relevant before commencing forensic preservation - files should be forensically verifiable all the time, from their very inception.

BedRock is a demonstration of that future - a way of preserving digital audio-video files ab initio and as a matter of course, in the very generation of the file.

It was a joy to have supported the BedRock team, comprising Ranveer Bains, Vaibhav Mittal, Sarah Do, John Shutler, Nicole Michaella Daduya, and S Bharath Raj, and overseen by Professor Kiruthika Ramanathan, and we’re proud of the groundbreaking work they did with BedRock.
